Volunteer Opportunities

There are a variety of ways to get involved with Salt Lake County Parks & Recreation.

Board Membership

Shape the future of our community by applying to serve on one of our advisory boards or park authorities.

  • Parks and Recreation Advisory Board
  • Open Space Trust Fund Advisory Committee
  • Dimple Dell Regional Park Advisory Board
  • Bingham Creek Regional Park Authority
  • Sugar House Park Authority

Volunteer Coaching

Volunteer coaches are our programs' greatest assets. We highly encourage parents to get involved to help ensure all participants have a positive, fun, and character-building experience.

To maintain fair play and team balance, groups of 3 or more participants registering together are requested to provide a volunteer coach for their team. When registering your child online, please ensure you complete the coach's contact box with your name, phone number, and email address.

Annual Volunteer Packet & Background Check

Every youth sports coach must submit a Coaches Volunteer Packet once per calendar year. This packet grants the County permission to run a mandatory background check to ensure player safety.

  • How to Submit: Download and save the packet to your computer to enable the fillable form fields. Once completed and signed, please print the forms and return them to the facility front desk.
  • The Packet Includes:
    • Volunteer Coach Job Description
    • Volunteer Coach Application
    • Background Check Waiver.

Online Coach Certification Program

The online Coaches Certification Program ensures all volunteers receive identical, high-quality training regarding Salt Lake County’s expectations. The curriculum focuses on prioritizing child safety, sharpening instructional coaching skills, and fostering good sportsmanship.

  • Format: The training is conducted entirely online and requires a Google account to access.
  • Validity: Once completed, your certification is valid for 2 years from the completion date and will be automatically recorded in the county's master database.
  • Verification: Upon completion, you will receive a digital certificate via email. Please retain this copy for your records; it serves as your proof of completion if a database technical error occurs.

Head Coach Credits & Regulations

To thank our volunteers, certified head coaches are eligible for a registration credit upon the successful completion of a sports season.

  • Credit Value: The voucher equals 50% of the base registration fee paid at the time of sign-up (excluding any assessed late fees).
  • Eligibility: Only the designated, certified head coach is eligible to receive the credit. Vouchers are strictly awarded after the season has concluded; under no circumstances are credits issued early.
  • Usage Limits: There is no annual limit on the number of credits a volunteer can earn. However, individual credits are valid for 1 year from the date of issue, cannot be redeemed for cash, are non-refundable, and can only be used at the specific recreation center where the coaching took place.
  • Conduct Policy: Coaches who participate in, instigate, or possess knowledge of actions contrary to the Salt Lake County Training Guidelines or Coaching Policies and Procedures will face disciplinary action. This may include the immediate revocation of their coaching certification and forfeiture of all accumulated credits.
