What is Personal Data?

"Personal data" means information that is linked or can be reasonably linked to an identified individual or an identifiable individual.

Which Notice Applies to You?

Choose the right notice based on what information you're providing:

Are you providing basic information, such as your name or address, that may be made available to the public? Read the "Privacy Notice - Public Record."

Are you providing sensitive information like your Social Security number, financial details, medical information, or income? Read the "Privacy Notice - Non-Public Record."

The personal data that you provide, or that is collected from you, is classified as a public record pursuant to Utah Code § 63G-2-301 of the Government Records Access and Management Act (GRAMA), and may be made available to the public as provided by Utah Code § 63G-2-201.

Official Notice

Salt Lake County Flood Control Engineering, a division of Public Works and Municipal Services, collects personal data when people apply for flood control permits, communicate about permitted work, report flood control concerns, or ask for information about County flood control facilities and operations.

Purposes and Uses

We use the information provided by applicants, representatives, and consultants, including contact information, project location and parcel details, plans, and other application materials, to review flood control permit requests and communicate decisions. We use permit information to arrange inspections, document site conditions, and follow up on work affecting flood control facilities. When we receive a report of flooding, a blockage, or facility damage, we use the reported location, details, and any contact information provided to assess the concern, coordinate a response, and follow up when needed. We also use information from general inquiries to answer questions about maps, County facilities, permits, studies, flood preparedness resources, and other topics pertinent to Flood Control operations.

Potential consequences of refusal (what may happen if you choose not to provide your personal data)

You may choose not to provide the personal data requested by Flood Control Engineering. However, without the information needed to identify a project, property, or applicant, we may be unable to process a permit application or respond fully to your request. Please note, failure to obtain a permit due to providing insufficient personal information is not a defense against any resulting violations of Flood Control Engineering ordinances. If you report flooding or a facility concern without a usable location or enough details, it may be harder to assess or respond to the report. If you fail to provide contact information when reporting an issue, we will not be able to follow up with you to request or provide additional information, which could result in the concern not being addressed appropriately.

Sharing and Selling of Personal Data (who may see your personal data)

We do not sell personal data. We may share relevant personal data, as permitted by law and as needed for the purposes described above, with the following parties: Flood Control Engineering staff and other Salt Lake County personnel, municipalities, canal companies, project partners, state or federal agencies, emergency responders, and county contractors. Some permit and project records may also be available to the public under GRAMA. Whether a particular record or part of a record can be released depends on its classification and applicable law.
